In the Garden of Grathar

Grathar replied, "Sir, your proposal is fair and I accept. But why wait so long for your wedding day? I can bring you nine baskets before the year is half over!"

"Ha! This cannot be done. But if you do, I will give you all three to wed."

Every day, Grathar walked in his garden. He stood among his fruit trees and whispered his secrets to them. He fed the ground with mixtures known only to himself. He watered them with potions of his own devising, and the orchards responded to his care. Before the year was half over, he went to the kopa and told him that the nine baskets were ready to be harvested.

The kopa was astonished. In wonder, he walked among the trees with Grathar and saw the ripe fruit hanging from the branches. And when he tasted it, he was filled with delight.

The feast was arranged for the very next day. The whole village and those from villages around came to see the marriage of the kopa to his newest bride, and there too was Grathar with not one, but three brides, all arrayed in the finest clothing. There was dancing and feasting, and everyone who ate the fruit declared it was the finest they had ever tasted. As the sun began to set, Grathar took his new wives to his home. It is said they lived long and happily, raised many children, and walked each day in the garden of Grathar, overcome by its beauty.
